Why Chain Length Comes First in Every Name
Every IUPAC organic chemistry name is built around a parent chain — the longest continuous carbon chain in the molecule — and the very first thing that parent chain's name communicates is exactly how many carbons it contains. This is done through a fixed set of prefixes, one per carbon count, that never change meaning no matter what functional group or substituents are also present.
These ten prefixes (covering one through ten carbons) are the single most foundational piece of vocabulary in all of organic nomenclature — literally every other naming rule you'll learn in this unit assumes you can instantly convert a carbon count into its correct prefix, and vice versa, without pausing to think about it.
💡 Memory Trick
The hub's trick is a full mnemonic sentence, one word per prefix in order: "My Excellent Professor Bought Purple High Heels On Nice Days" — Meth, Eth, Prop, But, Pent, Hex, Hept, Oct, Non, Dec, covering one carbon through ten. Say the sentence out loud a few times and the ten prefixes come back in exact order every time, which is exactly what you need when numbering a longer chain under exam pressure.
USING THE PREFIXES IN PRACTICE
Combining Prefix and Suffix
On their own, these ten prefixes just tell you carbon count — they say nothing yet about functional group. Combined with a suffix (covered in the next lesson), they generate the full parent name: meth- plus -ane gives methane, hex- plus -ene gives hexene, and so on through every combination this course will ask you to name.
It's worth noticing that these prefixes have older roots in Greek and Latin number words for four and above (tetra→but is actually a slight exception; but- has non-numeric Latin roots, while pent-, hex-, hept-, oct-, non-, and dec- track the familiar Greek/Latin number words pentagon, hexagon, octagon, decade), which is why they often show up again in unrelated vocabulary — recognizing that overlap can help the prefixes stick even faster.

You're handed a structure with an eight-carbon straight chain and need to identify the correct parent chain prefix before you can finish naming the compound.

Count every carbon in the longest continuous chain. Carefully trace the chain end to end, confirming exactly eight carbons are present.

Match the count to its prefix. Eight carbons corresponds to oct-, the eighth word in the MEPBHHOND mnemonic sentence.

Hold the prefix aside until the functional group is identified. The prefix alone (oct-) isn't a complete name — it still needs the correct suffix attached once you've identified the functional group present.

Combine prefix and suffix once ready. If the compound turns out to be a simple saturated chain, the full parent name becomes octane; if it instead contains a double bond, it would become octene, and so on.

Miscounting the parent chain length is one of the single most common ways students lose easy points on naming questions — always recount the longest chain carefully before committing to a prefix, especially in branched structures where it's easy to accidentally follow a shorter path.
⚠️ Most Common Carbon Chain Prefixes Mistakes
The most common mistake is assuming the longest chain drawn horizontally across the page is automatically the longest chain in the molecule — the true longest chain sometimes bends through a branch point and isn't the one drawn in a straight line. The second common trap is confusing but- (4 carbons) with a numeric Greek root, when it's actually one of the few prefixes in this set with different etymological origins.
